Machame Route

According to the climbers, the Machame route is the most popular path. This route is a choice for many people because it provides impressive views and a variety of habitats.

  • The reason behind its popularity, about 50% of all climbers, and most experienced climbers take the Machame route. It is also one of the low-priced routes due to its easy access and shorter itinerary.
  • This route is known as the Whiskey route, given its reputation for being a tough climb.
  • The Machame Route climb can be done in approximately six days and five nights on the mountain. Though, it is most often tackled over seven days and six nights.
  • The hike begins at Machame Gate, located in the southern base of the mountain, which is just a short drive from Moshi or Arusha.
  • The trek starts within Mount Kilimanjaro’s lush, fertile, montane rainforest. The lower slopes receive quite a bit of rain. The track may be steep and slippery, so trekking poles are advised.
  • Experiences climbers highly recommended as the days will feature 6-8 hours hiking with daily ascents of 900m to 1,000m. Depending on the Machame route, you may be trekking at an altitude of over 3,500m.
  • Try to wear your hiking boots before your adventure to Kilimanjaro to avoid blisters. Stay hydrated all day and carry a reusable water bottle with a filter to reduce the impact of altitude sickness.

Before your trek, try to embark on a few practice camping trips to get familiar with your environments. Don’t forget to stop and take it the view along the way to the summit. After all, the journey is the finest part of life.

Itinerary

Day 1

Kilimanjaro Airport – Arusha
Our driver will pick you up from the Kilimanjaro airport (JRO) on your arrival and drop you in Arusha.

Day 2

Arusha – Machame Camp
In the morning drive for about 90 mins from your hotel to Machame Gate for registration and briefing. Hike through rain forest trails with other goers on this famous route Altitude (3000m) Trekking time: 5-7 hours.

Day 3

Machame Camp – Shira Camp
Trek across a valley, a stream and then climb up a steep ridge. The path drops into a gorge, climb gently onto the moorland of the Shira Plateau, one of the most fascinating areas of the Mountain. Altitude (3,840m) Trekking time: 4-5 hours

Day 4

Shira Camp – Lava Tower
Acclimatization day After breakfast, hike up to the Shira Cone and back down to the camp for a late lunch. Beautiful views of the Shira plateau. In the evening, relaxat the Camp. It is also possible to hike up to the Lava Tower and stay at Lava Tower Camp for the night. This will minimize walking distance in the next leg to Barranco camp.

Day 5

Lava Tower – Barranco
Trek up to Lava Tower (Wedge Buttress) at 4600m then trails descend gradually to Barranco Camp at 3950m. Beautiful views of the Barranco wall and so-called ‘the breakfast wall’ will be seen from the Camp Altitude (3950m) Trekking time: 6-7

Day 6

Barranco – Barafu
On this day you will conquer the Barranco Wall ‘breakfast wall’ to the top for about one and half hour, a good warm up for the rest of the days, hike to Karanga Valley and on to Barafu Camp. Altitude (4600m) Trekking time: 7hours.

Day 7

Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
Start for the last leg to Uhuru peak by 00:15 – After 5 - 6 hours of a steady climb on heavy scree you’ll arrive at Stella Point on the rim of the Kibo Crater. A magnificent sunrise will welcome you to enjoy the beauty of the snows of The Kilimanjaro. After 1 – 1.5 hours hike on the Southern rim of the Crater you’ll reach UHURU PEAK - The Highest Point in Africa at 5896m above sea level You’ve made it to the ROOF OF AFRICA! Spend some time to take memorable photos, admire the beautiful views of the Kibo Crater and the glacier fields. Retrace the route down to Barafu Camp for brunch and then to Mweka Camp Altitude (3100m) Trekking time 5-7 hours

Day 8

Mweka Camp - Arusha
Breakfast, descend leisurely to Mweka gate. After Certificate Awards and photos our transfer vehicle will drive you to Arusha. Trekking time:3 hours

Day 9

Arusha – Kilimanjaro Airport
Our driver will drop you back to the airport for your flight back home
